
And can the cells evade the immune response? Wait, you may say, what
immune response, I thought these mice lacked an immune system? Well, the
immune system has some backups, which aren't good enough by themselves to
keep you safe. One of these is a group of cells called NK cells. Where T
cells are interested in whether you're making unfamiliar proteins you
shouldn't, NK cells check to see whether you ARE making proteins you
should, basically ID badges. Guess what, it's the same environmental
problem - in the test tube, the cells aren't getting the right education,
as it were.
