
So, gene therapy faces a lot of problems. But what are our current
alternatives? While there's a lot of study going into finding safer
viruses for gene therapy, for the moment a direct gene therapy approach
wouldn't work. We could try to treat them with stem cells, but if the
stem cells came from another person, our patient's immune system would
reject them. And we could treat them with their OWN stem cells, but
their stem cells have the same problem they do, so we would have to fix
their cells first. Thus, we have a combination approach - what if we get
a person's stem cells and fixed those cells with gene therapy?
